Per comporre questi tre cicli liederistici, Britten trasse ispirazione dai massimi poeti europei come Shakespeare, Blake, Shelley, Keats, ma anche Rimbaud. La musica di Britten moltiplica il rapporto tra voci e strumenti, passando dai soli archi (Les Illuminations) a un ensemble d’archi con strumenti a fiato obbligati, arpa e timpani (Nocturne), senza dimenticare l’affascinante dialogo con il corno nella Serenade. Un mondo sonoro unico che ci viene svelato da un ensemble di musicisti in magnifica forma.
