Con An American Dream? Barbara Hannigan esplora il concetto di “Sogno americano”.
«Sono cresciuta ammirando l’America. Ne sono ancora affascinata, ma in larga parte in modo nostalgico. Con questo repertorio voglio esprimere la mia ammirazione per l’incredibile creatività e la tenacia dei compositori che hanno saputo dare forma a un linguaggio musicale autenticamente proprio».
La direttrice e soprano canadese collabora con i suoi partner di lunga data, la Göteborg Symphony Orchestra, in questo programma dedicato a opere di compositori americani. Con “la fiera” come tema ricorrente lungo tutto il repertorio, l’immagine di copertina mostra un cavallo di giostra fermo, un oggetto decorato e apparentemente gioioso, ma con il pavimento crepato e metà delle luci spente. Nostalgia e memoria si intrecciano così a un sottofondo di oscurità e distruzione.
Dal capolavoro di George Gershwin Porgy and Bess, opera su amore, dipendenza, razzismo e speranza, è inclusa la celebre Symphonic Picture nell’arrangiamento di Robert Russell Bennett. Ispirandosi alla visione del film muto Nosferatu, Aaron Copland ha composto la vibrante Dance Symphony. Il Carousel Waltz (arr. Don Walker) è l’ouverture del musical di Broadway Carousel di Richard Rodgers.
Per il gran finale, Barbara Hannigan si riunisce al compositore e arrangiatore americano Bill Elliott nella loro creazione condivisa At the Fair, una suite che intreccia numerosi brani e temi della tradizione americana, tra cui Have I Stayed Too Long at the Fair? e il celebre successo di Jule Styne Don’t Rain on My Parade.
