«Se, in un universo parallelo, Wagner avesse scritto una sinfonia anziché il Ring di sedici ore, potrebbe effettivamente somigliare al mio Ring Odyssey».
Queste sono le parole usate dal nuovo direttore musicale dell’Orchestre National Bordeaux Aquitaine, Joseph Swensen, per presentare questa antologia di Der Ring des Nibelungen per soprano, tenore, basso-baritono, coro maschile e orchestra, che ha composto basandosi sulla monumentale tetralogia di Wagner. Il direttore d’orchestra americano confessa che, durante una rappresentazione di Tristano, Wagner gli si è improvvisamente rivelato come “un sognatore” pieno di “umiltà, tenerezza, vulnerabilità e generosità”. Swensen ha voluto seguire la cronologia delle opere e rispettare la musica originale: «La mia solenne promessa a Wagner era che, a parte il rullo dei timpani solisti per indicare il passare del tempo, non avrei cambiato o aggiunto una sola nota al suo capolavoro». Un’affascinante impresa, registrata durante un memorabile concerto e interpretata da cantanti e strumentisti eccezionalmente impiegati.
