«Ho scoperto i ‘Vespri’ di Rachmaninov cantando in un coro e mi hanno profondamente toccato. Questa musica suggerisce naturalezza e semplicità, ma in realtà la sua architettura è complessa e innovativa per il suo tempo, trattando le voci quasi in modo orchestrale. Ho collocato l’opera in un contesto liturgico concepito traendo ispirazione dalle cerimonie ortodosse che ho avuto la fortuna di frequentare in Russia e in Romania. La caratteristica unica e la bellezza di questa veglia (che nelle chiese ortodosse comprende sia i Vespri sia i Mattutini) è che accompagna le preghiere dei fedeli dal tramonto fino all’alba».
