Per il suo primo album con Linn, Solomon’s Knot affronta una delle opere più affascinanti di Bach. Della Köthener Trauermusik non è sopravvissuta neppure una nota, ma quasi ogni altro dettaglio della sua esecuzione è noto: la data, i primi interpreti, il librettista e il testo.
La ricostruzione realizzata da Chad Kelly si basa su diverse fonti, prima fra tutte la prima versione della Matthäus-Passion di Bach. Il progetto è stato commissionato a Kelly dallo stesso Solomon’s Knot, sia per l’esecuzione sia per questa registrazione dal vivo. La sua ricostruzione non pretende di essere definitiva: una certezza di questo tipo è impossibile e, in fondo, poco significativa. Kelly si avvale piuttosto di una libertà creativa attentamente ponderata per restituire vita a due elementi centrali dell’opera originale: la forza autentica del testo e il contesto dell’occasione per cui fu composta.
Definito da The Observer «uno degli ensemble più innovativi e creativi del Regno Unito», il collettivo barocco Solomon’s Knot affronta questa rara ricostruzione con la consueta energia, in una registrazione dal vivo realizzata nella Dreieinigkeitskirche durante il festival Tage Alter Musik Regensburg.
