Geister Duo deve il suo nome all’ultima opera pianistica di Robert Schumann, la Geistervariationen, sul cui tema Johannes Brahms, amico intimo degli Schumann, compose le sue Variazioni op. 23 per pianoforte a quattro mani. Questa registrazione vuole fungere da ponte tra i due compositori, amati dai pianisti da David Salmon e Manuel Vieillard e la cui immaginazione si riflette nel nome del loro duo.
Il programma dell’album si completa con “Dalla foresta boema” op.68, un lavoro relativamente sconosciuto, ma certamente tra le pagine più notevoli della letteratura per pianoforte a quattro mani con la sua dimensione orchestrale così piena di riferimenti alla musica popolare e ricca di colori premonitori del crepuscolo dell’Ottocento.
