DESCRIZIONE
Theodora, tra i diciassette oratori in inglese di Handel, si distingue per unicità. La vicenda non è tratta dalla Bibbia, si svolge in epoca cristiana, non c’è trionfo nazionale e non si conclude con gioia. I protagonisti muoiono, la comunità con cui il pubblico si identifica è in pericolo di vita e il coro finale è in tonalità minore. Un dramma musicale che possiamo indicare come diretto antenato de I dialoghi delle Carmelitane di Poulenc.
Handel, ormai sessantacinquenne, scrisse un’opera troppo complessa e radicale per la maggior parte del pubblico dell’epoca. Oggi Theodora è considerata un punto di riferimento, un’opera dello spirito, intensa e commuovente.
