‘Londra, aprile 1604. Con l’edizione appena stampata della sue Lachrimæ, John Dowland si incammina verso casa, a Fetter Lane. Avrebbe dovuto tornare in Danimarca già da tempo, ma tutte le sue energie sono state impegnate in quella nuova pubblicazione, il suo ultimo e più ambizioso lavoro: l’integrale della musica strumentale, ventun danze, dedicate ad Anna di Danimarca, Regina d’Inghilterra, uno dei più grandi capolavori della musica rinascimentale.
Dowland aveva lasciato l’Inghilterra per entrare al servizio della corte danese, deluso per non essere stato nominato compositore di corte di Elisabetta I. In Danimarca ha dunque scritto una magnifica raccolta di opere strumentali, gran parte di esse pervase dalla malinconia tipica dell’Inghilterra del tardo Cinquecento. Musicall Humors – un consort di viole che raccoglie i migliori interpreti nel panorama internazionale – esegue l’intera raccolta di pavane, galliarde e alemanne organizzate in suite, ognuna con il proprio carattere.
